CAGLE, TN.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation
today honored the Sequatchie Valley Coal Corporation with a 2003 Environmental
Stewardship Award in recognition of their efforts to reclaim and correct
neighboring strip mines.
TDEC Division of Water Pollution Control Director Paul
E. Davis presented the 2003 Aquatic Resource Preservation Award to SVCC
Chief Executive Officer Bret Clayton during an awards ceremony at the
company’s coal mine near Cagle in northern Sequatchie County.
“We are very pleased Sequatchie Valley Coal Corporation
took action to improve water quality in Tennessee,” said Davis.
“They took the lead to mitigate impacts on local streams, and
their efforts were very successful.”
In the past, runoff from SVCC’s mine operations
entered neighboring unreclaimed strip mines that were polluting nearby
streams. With the cooperation of TDEC and the Tennessee Department of
Agriculture’s nonpoint source water pollution program, SVCC lead
the effort to address this problem by funding and executing its Dry
Creek Remining Demonstration Project.
The project took four months to complete and four months
after completion, significant water quality improvements were noted
in the nearby receiving steam of Dry Creek. Water samples collected
from Dry Creek showed a 50 percent reduction of iron loading from the
unreclaimed mines and 100 percent reduction of acid loadings.
