Seven new members of three Higher Education Commissions where named by Governor Phil
Bredsen on Friday. There are three vacancies on The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees.
The Trustees governs the University of Tennessee which has campus in Knoxville, Chattanooga,
Martin and Memphis. Three current vacanies with The Tennessee Board of Regents, which
governs the remainder of State run University and Colleges.
The remanding vacancy belongs to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
The University of Tennessee Board of Trustee open positions where
the student member, faculty member and citizen representative residing in the 5th Congressional
District, which represents Nashville. The make up of the Board of Trustee has been set up by
state law to create an equal makeup of Tennesseans. Carol White a student at the Knoxville
Campus was named to the student position which rotates each year between the four campus.
Miss White, 20 a Sophomore from McKenzie is a food and science major with a concentration in
pre-pharmacy. She is a member of UT’s Student Alumni Association, Vice Chairman of the
undergraduate Academic Council, Volunteer Ambassador and a Whittle Scholar. James Murphy
the 3rd an Attorney from Nashville and former Law Director for Nashville/Davidson County
Metro Government was select to fill the 5th District position. White, 48, received his under
graduate degree from U.T.K. in political science degree and his law degree from the University
Law School also in Knoxville. He is a board member of U.T. Alumni Association and is a
member of the Nashville and Tennessee Bar Association His term is for six years. Michael
Combs a professor of Music at the Knoxville Campus will fill the Academic position for one year.
A faculty member since 1968 is the current president of the U.T. Knoxville Faculty Senate.
Combs, 60, received his degree in music from University of Illinois at urbana-Champaion and a
master‘s degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He is the principal timpanist with
the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
The Board of Regents governs 13 community colleges and 6 state
universities and 23 technology centers across the state of comprising of 151,000 students. The
open Regent seats are student member, faculty member and 5th district member. Matthew
Chapman of Gallatin a student majoring in finance at Middle Tennessee University in
Muffresboro is the student member for one year. Chapman, 21, a graduate of Volunteer
Community College in Gallatin where he was President of the Student Government Association.
He is also on the search committee for a new President at Volunteer State. Kathryn Bryd a
associate professor of English at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville was
select for the one year Faculty member. Bryd, 48 serves as the President of the Faculty council at
Pellissippi. Before joining Pellissippi she was a adjunct instructor at Maryville College and before
there a journalism instructor at the University of Cincinnati. She’s a graduate of University of
Tennessee at Knoxville where she received a bachelor’s degree in education and a master degree
in English. Tom Jackson, President of the marketing and communication firm of Tom Jackson
and associate is the 5th district member. Under Governors Blanton and Alexander he served as
the first Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development. Jackson, 67, will
be serving his second , six year stint on the board of Regents after serving from 1993 to 1999. He
was also the Chairman of the Nashville utility Nashville Electric Service. He was also a former
board member of the Travel Industry of America, and former board member of the Nashville
Cancer Association. He received his bachelor degree in economics from Middle Tennessee
University in Mufreesboro.
The Tennessee Higher Education Commission promotes and
oversees all matters with state run faclities of higher education . Katie Winchester of
Dyersburg, Vice Chairman of First Citizen National Bank is the Eighth District representative and
will serve for four years. Winchester, 62, a banker with First Citizen since 1961 serving in many
roles during that time has been the chief executive since 1996. She served as Chairman of the
Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce and Vice Chairman of the Dyersburg State
Community College Foundation Board. She also served as a member of the Federal Advisory
Council for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 1999 to 2001.
