NAMED TENNESSEE’S TOP
JROTC CADET

Kevin Beavers, arecent graduate of Soddy-Daisy High, has been named
Tennessee’s 2003 Junior ROTC Cadet of the year by the American Legion
Cadet Col. Beavers, who is past JROTC Trojan battalion Commander, was
recently awarded a trophy and $2,500 scholarship at the American Legion’s state
conference in Nashville. He will attend West Point Preparatory School in Monmouth,
New Jersey, this fall.
“To be named the top cadet in the state says a lot for Kevin’s character and
leadership ability,” said Soddy-Daisy High School High Principal Robert Smith. “He is a very
bright young man with a promising future ahead of him. We all wish him well in his studies at
west Point.”
The American Legion awards the Junior ROTC Cadet of the Year in honor of
late Co;. Fred Bowling, former director of Army instruction for Hamilton County Schools. All
high schools with JROTC program are invited to submit a packet outlining the accomplishments
of one cadet for consideration each year. Beavers is the first recipient of this prestigious honor.
School officials say ROTC programs teach students valuable lessons about
citizenship, American History, current events, first aid and other life skills.
”our ROTC cadets leave the program with confidence. respect for others and high
self-esteem and expectations,” said Col. Tom McConnell, director of JOTC programs for
Hamilton County Schools. “ Students enrolled can also earn credit in U.S. government and
wellness.”
Beavers was also recognized for his achievements at the June 26 regular meeting
of the Hamilton County School Board.
