WEEK SEVEN WRAP UP
|
|
Week seven of the high school football season in wet/foggy East Tennessee
found several close and thrilling games and others not as close. Some region alignments were
made a little clearer especially in region 2, class 5A. Lost by Soddy-Daisy left three in third,
with Oak Ridge leading and McMinn County in second.
Hixson and Red Bank played a slug fest in the fog at Red Bank Community
Sadium. Ooltewah pulled out a squeakier with the Mountaineers of Heritage. Baylor went to
middle Tennessee and lost 15 to 3 to Franklin County in Winchester.

HIXSON WINS OVER RED BANK IN 5 O.T.'S
In a wild tuggle - war of a game Hixson out scored Red Bank in 5 overtimes
to run their record to 1-2 in the region and 2-5 overall. The Lions and wildcats each scored
touchdowns in the first four overtimes. In the fifth overtime Red Bank who has seen better years
and better luck had to settle for a Ryan Nelson field goal. Hixson took the ball on the 10, which
under TSSAA rules each times gets a first-and-10 from opposing teams 10-yard line at the
beginning of each quarter. Hixson handed the ball to tailback Wilford Blowe who dove for the
corner of the end zone for the winning score. Hixson once behind 14-7 had a chance to win the
game late in the fourth quarter but, missed a field goal. Hixson’s Adam Owens had four
touchdown, three in overtime and one in regulation. Red Bank’s fine tailback Clarence Goines
also had four touchdowns on 22 carries and a total of 145 yards on the grounds.
OOLTEWAH FIGHTS OFF HERITAGE
Ooltewah Owls previously winless in region 2 5A scored twice in the
first-quarter and held on to win 14-6 over Heritage at James N. Monroe Stadium. Special teamsplay set up the two Ooltewah touchdowns early in the opening frame. Antonio Landsden
returned the game's opening kick 44 yards into Heritage territory at the 46. Seven plays later, thanks mostly to the running of Elliot Harris, the Owls were on the board. Harris, who carried
three times for 23 yards on the march, finished it with a twisting and turning 12-yard burst into the end zone. The Owls' defense helped Landsden again set up a score. After forcing Heritage
into a 3-and-out on its first series, Landsden returned Brian Yates' punt 42 yards back to the 16. Two plays, and 16 seconds later, Harris was back in business. He eluded the pursuing
Mountaineers' defense along the right sideline for a 16-yard score and John Gregory's second point after put the Owls up 14-0 less than six minutes into the contest. Heritage walk though the
Owl defense for 367 yards of offense on 67 plays, rushing 55 times for 257 yards. The Owls had just 164 yards total offense, only 49 yards of which came in the second half. The Mountaineers
were dominant in the second half and had first-and-goal in the third quarter but failed to capitalize. They were stopped on fourth-and-inches when Daniel Gregory was ruled to have not
crossed the goal. It was similar to Heritage's two-point conversion in the first half, when the same ruling was made on a Gregory run. Later on, the Mountaineers were again driving but fumbled
away possession at the 10. Ooltewah keep on come up with stop after stop to win for the first time in region play to bring their region record to 1-3 and 2-5 overall.

BAYLOR FALLS TO FRANKLIN COUNTY
Baylor Red Raiders traveled to Middle Tennessee to face the Franklin County
Rebels in Winchester. The Rebels played a near perfect game. The second quarter was all
Rebels as Quincy Russell tossed a 44-yard bomb to Andy Bishop and Russell galloped 41 yards
for another score. Both PATs were missed, but the Rebels took the lead 12-3.
Coleton Bragg would add a field goal to the Rebel's total, making the score 15-3 in the third
quarter. Baylor got its first and only points in the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal. The
crowd spent the entire night yelling D-E-F-E-N-S-E, which the rebels respond, they gave up 214
yards, but kept the Red Raiders out of the end zone.

SODDY-DAISY FALLS TO McMINN COUNTY
In a region 2-5 A clash that was billed as for second place, McMinn
County Cherokees ran all over Soddy-Daisy. Led by Quarter back Derrick Vestal and running back Maurice Smith,
McMinn had 318 yards and 16 first downs. They where able to play ball contol and keep the ball away
from Soddy-Daisy's multi threat offense. The finial statics look pretty even on paper, but two long drives result in
nothing, but turnovers for Soddy Daisy. McMinn defense bent but, did not break time after time. The Trojans scored late on a touchdown from back up quarter back
Gary Orr to receiver Trae Jackson, and a near touch down as wide receiver Chris Gross caught an Orr pass on the one yard line has the clock stuck 0.
