SODDY-DAISY DEFEATS HERITAGE

Photo Soddy - Daisy held home team Maryville heitage to one touchdown, while the Trojans where able to score two touchdowns and a Eric Tyner field goal. The game was tight troughout with the 5-1 Trojans scoring a the last drive of the night to make a close 9-7 score into a 16-7 win. Heritage who was celebrating homecoming are 1-2 in the region and 1-5 overall. The game was a defense stand off from start to finish. Soddy-Daisy scored early but, missed the extra point the onlynegative moment in a stellar kicking performace by place kicker/punter Eric Tiner and the special team. With 38 seconds remaining in the half Heritage quaterback Dustin Merritt throw a short pass on 3rd and goal into the endzone. Wide receiver Randy Swafford tipped the ball in the beautiful cool Smokey Mountain night where Heritage's Justin Bryce grabbed the ball to the tie the score 6-6. Photo The extra point was good to bring the score 7-6. Soddy-Daisy went quick to work and moved the ball to the 23 yard line on a 41 yard screen pass from Trojan quarter back Tlyer Phelps to running back Klye Winton. Eric Tiner then came in to nail a 33 yard field goal to end the half 9-7. The second half had only one score the clock killing drive by the Trojans on the last possession of the night. Tiner kept Heritage back up with his punting throuohout the night. Soddy-Daisy was led by Fullback Brandon Battles 63 yards and Klye Witons 42 yards on the ground. As usual Paul Campbell played his blue collar/physical style of football on both sides of the field. The Trojans will take their 5-1 record to Athens Friday night to take on the 4-2 McMinn Cherokees in a huge Region 2-5A match.
